Novelizations of Scandinavian Prose Literature in the Late Premodern Period. Narratological Approaches

The project aims at studying changes in the narrative tradition in the Nordic countries in the long 18th century. In a comparative approach we wish to explore changes in narrational and medial constituents in the Danish, Swedish and Icelandic prose tradition that correspond to what Michail Bakhtin called novelization and that go along with a high degree of self-reflexivity. We thus wish to depart from a historical definition of the genre “novel” and rather take the changes, challenges and reformations of narrative traditions as one of the core characteristics of a supratemporal metagenre “novel”.
